Julian Assange jailed in London as Visa cuts all payments to WikiLeaksApr 16, 2012
British judge has denied ball for WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange, who told a London court he intends to fight his extradition to Sweden on sex crime allegations. Judge Howard Riddle told Assange that he had "substantial grounds" to believe the 39-year-old Australian wouldn't turn up for subsequent proceedings. He then put Assange into UK custody ahead of an extradition hearing. Mark Stephens, Assange's British lawyer, has given a brief press conference after the hearing. Meanwhile, Visa has suspended all payments to WikiLeaks. The payment processor's move leaves the website without its main source of revenue, as the whistleblower largely depends on online donations. Popular online payment company PayPal has already stopped its operations with WikiLeaks. Swiss authorities announced Monday that they closed the new Swiss bank account of the website's founder Julian Assange, who was arrested Tuesday in London on charges of sexual assault.

Visa (NYSE: V) is moving closer to its CEO, Joseph W. Saunders' goal of receiving more than half of their generated revenue outside of the US by 2015 by developing a payment system in Rwanda. This move will help connect Rwanda's 11 million citizens to the global economy and will modernize the nation's payments network under an accord with the government, working with partners to upgrade automated teller machines, install merchant card readers, develop e-commerce capabilities and provide financial education. Visa chose Rwanda, where 86 percent of the population lacks access to traditional financial services, because of its friendliness toward private enterprise, stable regulatory structure and smaller population. Its economy also grew by 8.8% and has risen steadily out of the ashes of the 1994 genocide in which 1 million citizens were murdered in a 100 day period. Visa will also work with RwandAir to develop online ticketing and reservations technology. Said National Bank of Rwanda Governor Claver Gatete, "In all economies, well-developed financial systems are essential for sustained economic growth. The partnership between the government of Rwanda and Visa is an opportunity to increase efficiency and inclusion through the use of electronic financial services." Visa (NYSE: V) climbed 0.5 percent to $97.71 and has advanced 38 percent this year through last week.
